Traditional Moroccan Hammam
Traditional olive cleansing for the hammam.
Moroccan Beldi Black Soap, traditionally known as Sabboun Beldi, is a soft olive-based soap paste rooted in the Moroccan hammam. Used on warm, damp skin, it forms the cleansing foundation of the hammam ritual and prepares the skin for traditional Kessa exfoliation.
Selected by Maison de l’Atlas for its traditional character, rich texture and connection to Morocco’s centuries-old bathing culture.
Moroccan Hammam Heritage
Beldi soap has long been part of the traditional Moroccan hammam, where cleansing is approached as a sequence rather than a single step.
Traditionally made as a soft olive-based soap, its distinctive dark colour and rich paste-like consistency differ from conventional solid soaps. Warmth and water soften the skin before Beldi is applied, preparing it for the exfoliation that follows.
This relationship between steam, Beldi soap and the Kessa glove remains one of the most recognisable elements of Moroccan hammam culture.
The Ritual
Beldi Soap forms the cleansing foundation of The Hammam Purifying Ritual — a complete sequence of warmth, cleansing, exfoliation and freshly prepared mineral care.
1. Steam
Begin with warm water or steam to soften the skin and prepare it for cleansing.
2. Cleanse
Massage Beldi Soap over warm, damp skin and allow it to sit briefly
before rinsing thoroughly with warm water.
3. Refine
On warm, damp skin, use a traditional Kessa glove with gentle,
sweeping movements to exfoliate the skin.
4. Mix
Combine Ghassoul Clay with a small amount of Nila Powder.
Add water gradually in your ritual bowl and mix until a smooth
mineral paste is formed.
5. Apply
Apply the freshly prepared Ghassoul and Nila mixture to the skin
as the mineral-care stage of the ritual.
6. Rinse
Rinse thoroughly with warm water and gently pat the skin dry.
Clean. Refined. Renewed.
Maison Selection
Maison de l’Atlas selects Beldi soap with respect for its traditional place within Moroccan hammam culture.
We look for the characteristic soft texture, deep natural colour and rich consistency associated with traditional Beldi preparations, allowing the ingredient to remain close to the ritual from which it comes.
Natural variation in colour, aroma and texture may occur between batches. This is part of the character of traditionally prepared raw materials.
Care & Precautions
For external cosmetic use only.
Avoid contact with the eyes and mucous membranes. Do not use on irritated, damaged or freshly shaved skin.
Perform a patch test before first use and discontinue use if irritation occurs.
When using a Kessa glove, exfoliate gently and avoid excessive pressure or repeated scrubbing of the same area.
Keep the container securely closed and avoid introducing water directly into the product. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
